WordPress editor is stuck – September, 2020 update.

Since I first published this a few years ago, thousands of people looking for help with a stuck text and visual editor on WordPress have visited this page. I have also assisted many people with this issue on their websites.

While all my instructions below for solving this WordPress visual editor issue remained the same, I have added a step to make sure you have properly updated your WordPress theme.

I also wanted to let you know that I am available to solve this common WordPress issue for a flat $75 price. I do the work first, you pay when you’re satisfied.

I recently experienced this WP error myself

So I just had this issue today on one of my own websites. The editor in my WordPress pages and posts was stuck on visual. I was unable to switch back and forth between the text and visual editors. I also noticed that all of the text in my pages were in the color white which was very strange.

What did I do first? I panicked of course! Just kidding. Having fixed this issue on many WordPress websites, I knew right away what I needed to do.

Here’s how to solve the problem

Let me preface this by telling you that you MUST backup your WordPress installation before you try any of these steps. Using a free plugin like Updraft Plus will give you the peace of mind that you need to fix this issue.

Here are the steps that you should follow to troubleshoot a stuck visual editor in WordPress. After each step, refresh a post or page to see if you can switch between the visual and text editors.

Clear your cache – if this doesn’t work, go ahead and disable your cache for the time being while you troubleshoot this problem.

Update or reinstall WordPress – If for some reason, you are unable to reinstall WordPress through the dashboard, you will need to manually install a fresh copy through FTP or your file manager.

Update your WordPress plugins and themes

Make sure your theme was updated correctly. Many WordPress users are using paid themes which may not update automatically with the rest of the plugins and themes.

If you get to this step without success, you will need to take some more drastic steps to diagnose the problem. If you run a busy website, you may want to consider 1). putting the site in maintenance mode or 2). copying your site to another location where you can run some tests.

Disable ALL of your plugins and reactivate them one-by-one – yes, this sounds horrible, doesn’t it? But chances are high that you WILL discover that one of your plugins is acting up. When you identify the misbehaving plugin you will probably need to find an alternative and/or contact the plugin’s author to report the issue.

The solution to my stuck WordPress editor today was reinstalling the latest version of WordPress. Now I am able to switch back and forth between the two editors seamlessly. Problem solved!

WordPress powers more than 25% of the web so it is no surprise that this powerful content management system is a constant target for hackers. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to make it difficult for hackers to do their dirty work on your WordPress site. One step that you should take immediately is to hide your WordPress login URL.

By default, the login URL for WordPress is found at http://yoursite.com/wp-login.php (/wp-admin redirects to this url). This URL is easy to remember but this opens up a security hole because anyone can figure out where to login on your website. Of course, a person also has to possess your username and password but if they were somehow able to obtain that information, also knowing your URL would make it all the more easier for them to break into your site.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to hide your WordPress login URL so that it is known only to you. The easiest way to implement this measure is to install a plugin like WP Security or WPS Hide Login. WP Security offers a suite of security measures while WPS Hide is more lightweight and just helps you to hide the website login URL.

A word of caution: you need to be careful when installing one of these plugins because you can easily lock yourself out of your site if you do not know what you are doing. If you do get locked out, all you need to do is rename the plugin in Cpanel (or whichever file manager you are using) and the lock will be deactivated.

If you need assistance with implementing this important security feature, please click here to ask us for help.

One of the most common requests that I receive here at Maneo is troubleshooting a slow WordPress website. Addressing this issue is often troublesome because there can be many reasons for poor WordPress performance. Too many plugins, too many large images, and poorly designed WordPress themes are just a few of the potential causes. Usually, I will recommend:

Reducing the size of header, background, and gallery images in your WordPress installation.

Compressing CSS, JS, and text using GZIP (I have seen this have a dramatic effect on WordPress load times).

Installing a caching plugin such as WT3 Cache or WordPress Super Cache.

Reducing the number of plugins or replacing plugins with others that are designed better.

Unfortunately, there are times when no amount of tweaking will speed up a WordPress website. That’s when it’s time to go beyond WordPress and take a close look at your host. If your slow WordPress site is on a shared hosting package, you may be competing for resources with dozens of other websites. If some of those websites are resource intensive, they may hog the server and slow down all of the other websites.

If you are serious about improving your website’s performance, you will need to think about either switching to a better shared host or upgrading your hosting package to a VPS (virtual private server). Some shared hosts are better than others because they throttle websites that are hogging resources. A VPS is the best option because it will insulate your website from other websites on the server and ensure that your site is getting the resources that it needs.

Higher quality shared hosting or a VPS will cost you more money but upgrading will be well worth the money. Don’t forget that Google takes your page speed into consideration when determining where you will appear in the ranking. In other words, page speed is very important for SEO purposes. Besides that, you want to have a WordPress website that runs smoothly for your visitors.

By the way, you’ve probably noticed that my site is very fast. It absolutely is! Take a look. We are faster than 78% of the websites on the Internet:

It always surprises me how few of my clients are backing up their websites. WordPress backups are so important, not only because websites are hacked all the time, but also because websites can break during routine updates or theme modifications. It is always good to have a one-touch restore option that will bring your website back from the dead.

Before I start working on a client’s website, I almost always install a free plugin called Updraft Plus which allows me to backup files and databases very quickly. If anything goes wrong during my work on the site, I can simply restore the backup and the site will be restored. I know that implementing WordPress backups is my insurance policy in case anything goes wrong.

Where should I store the WordPress Backups?

Updraft Plus gives you the option of storing your backups on the server or in a remote location. While storing the backups on the server is useful in many situations, I always advise my clients to prepare for the worst. What if your installation is hacked or simply disappears? The best option is to store your WordPress Backups in Dropbox or Google Drive, which are both supported in Updraft Plus. If your installation is small enough, you can even have it sent to an email address.

How often should I backup WordPress?

Updraft Plus allows you to automatically backup your installation of WordPress on a regular basis. How often you should backup your site really depends on how often you are updating your site. If you are running an active WordPress blog with new posts and comments every day then it might be good to backup your site every few hours. If your site goes for days without changing then backing your website every two weeks would probably be fine.

I cannot tell you how many times a WordPress backup has saved my bacon. Knowing that I can quickly revert a website back to how I found it gives me the peace of mind that I need to do my job and do it well.

I have been working on a website this week that makes use of the WP Ecommerce plugin. When I first started on this website, it was extremely slow which was why I was asked to investigate. After deactivating the plugins one-by-one, I discovered that the WP Ecommerce plugin was the culprit.

The website contains more than 1400 products, hundreds of variations, and almost 100 categories. I ran some diagnostics and discovered that the site is producing some very slow MySQL queries, some of which are as long as a short novel. The combination of products, variations, and categories is absolutely killing the website’s speed.

Choosing between WP Ecommerce or WooCommerce?

If you are trying to decide between WP Ecommerce or WooCommerce, please don’t give it a second thought. Go with WooCommerce. WooCommerce is far more robust than WP Ecommerce and able to handle a big catalog and plenty of variations.

Already installed Wp Ecommerce?

If you’ve already installed WP Ecommerce and you are experiencing slow load times, here are two suggestions to help speed the site up.

Install the WT3 Total Cache Plugin. This plugin will cache your website pages and serve them faster to your customers. From my recent experience, I can tell you that this plugin works quite well with WP Ecommerce.

Enable MYSQL query caching. This won’t solve all of your problems but you will definitely see a difference, especially since this problem seems to be directly related to slow queries. If you don’t have access to your server, you will have to ask your host to help you implement this.

Transfer from WP Ecommerce to Woocommerce?

There are plugins out there that will allow you to transfer your products from WP Ecommerce to Woocommerce but they are very expensive and will change your URL’s. This is very bad for SEO. I tried working with one of these plugins over the weekend and the results were not good. Unfortunately, you are most likely stuck with finding ways to speed up your existing store site.
